Third graders performed their play "Backpack to the Future," which was written by teacher Allie Hyer. The play follows two students who discover their love of reading by traveling back in time to the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. Each decade is represented by a new and popular book: Charlotte's Web, Cricket in Times Square, Frog and Toad, Ramona Quimby Age 8, Ella Enchanted, and Bud Not Buddy.

Third graders have been reading various genres of books, which are presented in the play. Each decade also features a notable song but using words related to reading. For instance, Beat It by Michael Jackson becomes Read It. The nearly hour-long play has five songs with choreography, and each student has a speaking part.

It is a tradition at Bright for grades K-5 to present a grade-wide play each year. PK students perform songs in their annual Luau instead of a play.
